Confronted with the urban mobility
challenge, academic researches directed at the
topic have searched explanatory elements to the
comprehension of this phenomenon. Under the
focus of the person-environment studies, this paper
aims to identify through the thesis and dissertations
produced in Brazil, which are the main barriers
and facilitators in the use of bicycles in cities.
Two databases were consulted with the keyword
discussed the barriers and facilitators, from which
the description of the participants and the related
environmental characteristics were analyzed due
to this research framework. The results indicate
as the main barriers, and the well being, health,
and contact with environment as facilitators.
Thus, it is necessary to comprehend this human-
environmental phenomenon contextualizing
personal, environmental, social, and political
aspects of the use of bicycle.
Keywords: bicycle; person-environment studies;
urban mobility; sustainable transportation.
