Resumo: O objetivo do artigo é analisar como a inviolabilidade do direito à
vida se apresentou nos discursos parlamentares na Câmara dos Deputados do
Brasil entre 1991 e 2014, e na Cámara de Representantes do Uruguai, entre
1985 e 2014. Em um contexto no qual a laicidade é um valor importante nos
Estados democráticos modernos, a defesa da vida ganha centralidade na con-
trovérsia do aborto quando grupos religiosos enquadram o aborto como uma
escolha entre a vida ou a morte do feto. A proposta é identificar a relevância
desse argumento e comparar suas diferentes construções e articulações nos
debates desses países.

Abstract: The objective of this article is to analyze how the inviolability of the
right to life was presented in the parliamentary lectures in the Chamber of
Deputies of Brazil between 1991 and 2014 and in the Uruguayan House of
Representatives between 1985 and 2014. In a context in which secularism
is an important value in modern democratic states, the defense of life gains
centrality in the abortion controversy, since religious groups have framed the
interruption of gestation as a choice between the life or death of the fetus.
The proposal is to identify the relevance of this argument and compare their
dierent constructs and articulations in the debates of these countries.
