Governors suggest environmental protection partnership to Joe Biden

A coalition of 21 Brazilian governors committed to tackling the climate crisis is preparing a letter to U.S. President Joe Biden to establish a partnership and create what they call "the largest decarbonization economy on the planet."

The group Governors for the Climate seeks to qualify for investments of $20 billion in public and private resources that President Biden promised to make available during the electoral campaign in order to protect the Amazon.

The draft of the letter to which Valor had exclusive access is circulating among the governors amid the Covid-19 tragedy. It lists some of the subnational governments' commitments: reducing greenhouse emissions, promoting renewable energy, combating deforestation, complying with the Forest Code to conserve forests, improving efficiency in agriculture and cattle-raising, protecting indigenous peoples and finding ways to make "massive reforestation" feasible.

The intention is to propose a term of cooperation between the United States and the Brazilian state governments with joint actions.

The letter mentions as a goal to boost environmental regeneration, reduce inequalities, develop low-carbon economic chains, and create a new model resilient to pandemics. The basic text was created by the Brazil Climate Center (CBC), with the participation of scientists such as Carlos Nobre and forest engineer Tasso Azevedo, besides specialists from eight other organizations from Brazil and the U.S.

One of the great novelties of the proposal is that it includes not only the Amazon, but other biomes with large carbon stocks and rich biodiversity. They mention the Cerrado, the Atlantic Forest, the Caatinga and the Pantanal wetlands.

It mentions the expectation of the companies of the Brazilian Business Council for Sustainable Development (Cebds) of certifying, with the attraction of investments, 1.5 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, 300 times more than what is done today.
