Abstract
Purpose
Clust ering, routing, and data dis semination are an important issue in wireless
sensor network s. The basic fun ctions of wireles s sensor netw orks are pheno mena
controlling in the physical environ ment, and the reporting of sensed data to the central node
called sink, in which more ope rations can be done on the data. The most important
limitation of wireless sensor networks is energy consumption. There are several ways to
increase th e lifetime of these networks, that on e of the most important is the usi ng proper
clustering method. The aim of this study is to reduce energy consumption using an effective
clustering al gorithm and for t his purpose, the h oneybee colony me taheuristic method wa s
used for cluste r heads selection.
Methodology/appr oach/design
The simulat ion in this paper was done using MATLAB
software and t he proposed method is co mpared with the LEACH a nd SEED approach.
Findings
The results of simula tions in this research indicate that the resea rch has
significantly reduced the energy consumption in the network than LEACH and SEED
algorithms.
Originality/value
Given the energy constraints in the wireles s sensor network, provi ding
such solutions and using meta heuristic alg orithms can dramatically re duce energy
consumption a nd, consequently increase n etwork lifetime.

Introduction
The sensor delivers a sense of the environment in the form of an electrical
signal. This section may be a consisted of several types of sensors that can
measure the changes in several different parameters of the environ ment[1].
Wireless sensor networks are used to collect information in areas where the user
cannot be there. In a sensor network, the sensors individually measure local values
and send this information to other sensors if necessar y, and ultimately send them
to the base station. These networks are autonomous, and they are working without
