Shopping malls face worst situation since June

The shopping mall sector is now facing its worst scenario, in terms of closed facilities, since June 2020, Valor learned. Brazil has reached the highest number of malls not operating since that month - 359 closed and 213 open, most with some kind of restriction because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to Abrasce, the sector's association, there are only 29 malls currently operating without any kind of restriction, or 5% of the total. The organization also says that only four states - Roraima, Alagoas, Maranhão and Espírito Santo - have not imposed restrictions.

In 14 states, more than half of Brazil's federative entities, shopping malls had to close completely. They include São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Goiás and Bahia. In 18 states, curfews made them close earlier than usual. There are regions where both situations happened.

This scenario tends to increase the pressure on new negotiations between malls and shopkeepers. In recent days, large open companies, such as Iguatemi, Aliansce Sonae and BR Malls, have already informed that they will not negotiate rent exemptions for tenants, and other expenses, alleging that the current situation is different from the beginning of the pandemic.

At that time, the malls stopped operating all over the country, especially between March and April, and with no sales, they ended up exempting the stores for a certain period. Today, they say that the conversations about discounts will be individual, and evaluated case by case, without exemption, even with closed stores.
