MSC’s TIL to expand port terminals in Santos, Navegantes

Swiss group Terminal Investment Limited (TIL) intends to invest over R$2 billion in Brazil, alone or with partners, to expand port operations in Santos (São Paulo) and Navegantes (Santa Catarina). It is also preparing to bid for the STS 10, a new super container terminal expected to be auctioned by the end of 2022 in Santos. The route of the investments was drawn by the Brazilian executive Patrício Junior, TIL’s head of businesses in Latin America and the Caribbean, a region where the company runs eight different terminals in ports like Callao (Peru) and Valparaíso (Chile).TIL, a company controlled by MSC, one of the largest shipping companies in the world, intends to formalize in the first quarter of next year investment of $150 million in Portonave. Located in Navegantes, this private terminal acquired from Triunfo in 2017 can handle 1.3 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units of containers) a year and is considered one of the most efficient in the country. The problem is that, due to operational restrictions, the port can receive ships up to 350 meters long - and not at their maximum capacity. With the planned works on the berths, where vessels are moored, Portonave will be able to receive completely full ships 366 and 400 meters long.In Santos, where TIL owns 50% of Brasil Terminal Portuário (BTP), the plan is to invest R$1.4 billion to expand operations. In return, BTP has already filed a request with port regulator Antaq to extend its leasing contract for 20 years, until 2047. The improvement package includes four portainers (a crane used to lift containers), 27 RTGs (rubber tyred gantry cranes) and 46 trucks. Also part of the project is the readjustment of the buildings and an expansion in the reefer area (for refrigerated containers).TIL also intends to bid for STS 10, the new terminal in Santos. One area is currently run by Ecorodovias’s Ecoporto, whose contract expires in June 2023 and will not be extended.STS 10 is expected to be the largest port lease in Santos’s history. It is expected to receive R$2.2 billion in investments. According to Mr. Junior, TIL and Maersk’s APM Terminals - which are partners in Brasil Terminal Portuário - should bid separately, according to the degree of ambition of each. Afterward, they may eventually study a partnership.Last week, the executive was in Brasília and asked Antaq to speed up the analysis of a request for early renewal of the BTP contract. However, other points stand...
