Airbnb revamps offering with focus on cheaper rooms

Airbnb is returning to the origins of the lodging platform with a focus on shared and cheaper rooms. The announcement of the section called "Airbnb Rooms," in addition to 50 new features on the platform, was made this afternoon during Web Summit Rio, an innovation event in Rio de Janeiro.According to a report by Oxford Economics, conducted at the request of Airbnb, spending by guests booking through the platform in Brazil injected $5.2 billion into the local economy in 2022, including restaurants, attractions, and shopping, 31% more than in 2021.Spending on Airbnb Brazil accommodations is not included in this calculation and was not reported by the platform. However, according to the report, this spending represented 5.2% of all direct tourism activity in the country."What we did was go back to the roots of the platform," Catherine Powel, Airbnb’s global head of hosting, told Valor."One reason is that after the height of the [Covid-19] pandemic, people want to reconnect with hosts," she explained.Airbnb ended 2022 with a global net income of $1.9 million, marking its first profitable full year. Revenue for the year was $8.4 billion, up 40.1% from 2021.In the fourth quarter of last year, the company reported a 24% increase in revenue to $1.9 billion. The first-quarter financial statement will be released on the 9th.Brazil and Mexico are Airbnb’s main markets in Latin America, points out the executive, who spent 15 years as CEO and director of parks at the Walt Disney Company before joining Airbnb in January 2020, just before the pandemic.Last year, Airbnb served 3.1 million more guests in Brazil than in 2021 and recorded a 58% increase in daily rates booked in private rooms in the country compared to 2021."The volume of guests is growing and so is the spending of those guests on travel," Ms. Powell said.
