Bracell plans giant pulp plant in São Paulo state

Pulp maker Bracell's plans for its unit in Lençóis Paulista, São Paulo, are much bigger than the company has made public so far. Sources say the project for the former Lwarcel mill include the assembly of the largest recovery boiler in the world - the boiler is the central equipment in the production of pulp. This will make possible for the production to reach 2.8 million tonnes of bleached eucalyptus pulp a year, or 1.9 million tonnes of dissolving pulp a year.

Publicly, Bracell, which belongs to Singapore group Royal Golden Eagle, has been informing that the Star project will raise the total capacity of the mill acquired from Lwarcel to 1.5 million tonnes a year, a little more than half of the volume that the unit may reach with a boiler of that size. The announced expansion include the construction of the second pulp line, with annual capacity for 1.25 million tonnes. The line will be flexible, able to produce both dissolving pulp and bleached eucalyptus pulp (kraft). The current annual production of the plant is 250,000 tonnes.

The investments are estimated at R$8 billion, and the necessary licenses have already been issued. The construction permit, of January 21 of 2019, covers a bleaching line and a drying machine with capacity for about 1.5 million tonnes a year.

On the other hand, the same license already allows Bracell to assemble a recovery boiler with capacity for 12,000 tonnes per day in Lençóis Paulista, preparing the ground for the production of up to 2.8 million tonnes at some point. The unit will also receive three turbo-generators with capacity of up to 144 megawatts each.

For the plant to produce more than 1.5 million tonnes, Bracell will have to build a third pulp line and request new licensing to Cetesb, environmental company of São Paulo state, people familiar with the matter say. If the alteration in the production volume were small, the same license could be rectified.

Currently the largest recovery boiler operating in the world belongs to OKI in Indonesia, with capacity for...
