Consumer-complaint platform seeks new investor

Reclame Aqui, an online platform for brand reputation that has gained fame as a repository of consumer complaints, is seeking a new partner to expand its activities. The company, founded by entrepreneur Maurício Vargas, hired Lazard to find a financial or strategic investor. Originally, the company planned to prepare its international expansion, but that project was pushed back by the pandemic.

Founded in 2001, Reclame Aqui gets most of its revenue from 2,000 large companies, including telecom carriers and retailers, that use its consumer-relations platform, called Hugme. It expects to end this year with R$45 million to R$50 million in revenue, up from R$30 million in 2019.

Mr. Vargas, also the company's head, confirmed to Valor he was seeking an investor. He has three partners with whom he shares control, in addition to venture-capital firm DGF Investimentos, which invested in the company in 2018 and holds a 20% stake, and four minority shareholders.

In 2012, Reclame Aqui created holding company Óbvio Brasil, based in Delaware, in the US, to organize the businesses. Óbvio controls brands Reclame Aqui, Trustvox and Hugme. "We had the intention of making the international expansion this year, but thought it was better to wait," Mr. Vargas said. He doesn't want to relinquish control and doesn't rule out a foreign investor.

With e-commerce doing well during the pandemic and the arrival of 7 million new consumers at online stores during the first half, according to consultancy Ebit Nielsen, the number of monthly Reclame Aqui accesses rose to 30 million from 21 million.
