He could at least shed a tear

Seeing the fateful cabinet meeting and observing that the pandemic was not cited by the president, it becomes clear that by arrogance or even dumbness he missed a big opportunity to become a leader to be remembered by Brazilians for generations.

In situations of political or economic fragility, leaders, often for opportunism, tend to fabricate wars to rally people around a common goal. George W. Bush, for example, declared "War on Terror" in 2001, invaded Iraq in 2003 and got re-elected in 2004.

Here, the president didn't need to invent anything. When he was already under pressure of the ongoing recession, it fell on his lap a global war in which all are on the same side that could unify the country. His behavior is so pathological that he didn't realize he didn't need to create local and smaller enemies. He had an enemy against whom all would fight by his side.

Imagine that, in the beginning of the pandemic, he had soon admitted the WHO authority to fight covid-19 and ordered his Health minister to follow strictly all the entity's guidance.

He would say there is no leftist or rightist virus. That at that point he was forgetting all electoral differences, the stabbing in Juiz de Fora and the ideological divergences to summon green-yellow or red Brazilians for a life-or-death battle.

The president would hardly meet opposition to that. Who would be against that would be execrated in the media. He could then say that the reforms, admitted by the business world, would hibernate for some months, until the battle against the virus ended. Under his command, he would form a council with medical entities to decide the public policies in health. Another council, with politicians and economists, would establish measures to deal with the workers' loss of income, the companies' cash problems and the recession. Nobody could refuse to participate in such initiatives. The opposition would be disarmed and he could blame the recession, even if forecast before the pandemic, on the global tragedy. He could produce a fiscal deficit of the size he wanted. The global crisis would justify everything.

The presidency, so agile to operate social media, could take advantage of this...
