Drought affects crops in Rio Grande do Sul

The drought that has affected crops in Rio Grande do Sul has led to a reduction of more than 30% in the soybean harvest and more than 40% in the summer corn harvest, compared to the initial estimates of the agricultural research agency Emater/RS for the 2022/23 harvest. The institution, which is linked to the state government, released updated data on grain production on Tuesday during the Expodireto Cotrijal agribusiness fair in Não-Me-Toque, Rio Grande do Sul.In addition to soybeans and corn, the figures refer to rice and beans (first and second crop). In total, the production of Rio Grande do Sul is expected to reach 24.73 million tonnes, 26.9% less than Emater’s initial estimate of 33.84 million tonnes. The corn crop faces the biggest drop, of 41.05%, as the estimate fell to 3.6 million tonnes from 6.1 million tonnes. In the case of soybeans, the drought caused a 31.1% reduction from the initial estimate. Emater/RS had forecast production of 20.6 million tonnes. Now, it is 14.2 million tonnes. The reduction of 6.4 million tonnes is almost equal to the sum of soybean harvests estimated by the National Supply Company (Conab) for São Paulo (4 million tonnes) and Santa Catarina (2.6 million tonnes). As for rice, the Emater/RS’s estimate was revised to 6.9 million tonnes from 7.1 million tonnes, while the estimate for first-crop beans fell to 49.600 tonnes from 52.000 tonnes. The specialists kept the second-crop beans estimate unchanged at 28.100 tonnes. The technical director of Emater, Claudinei Baldissera, explained that the effects of the drought varied from one region of the state to another. And pointed out that, in general, the weather problems recorded in the current season were less severe compared to the last harvest (2021/22)."Last year’s drought was longer and more severe. In this year’s picture, there was heterogeneous rainfall, different within the municipalities, and several crops benefited from the sparse rainfall," he said.According to Emater/RS, even with the deficit in the current season, production in Rio Grande do Sul is expected to increase by 24.03% compared to the 2021/22 season, to...
