Electoral Court bars Armed Forces from monitoring voting machines

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) decided to exclude the Armed Forces from the list of entities that can monitor the electronic voting system. The measure aims to avoid new problems with the military, which acted controversially in last year’s elections under former President Jair Bolsonaro.The elections chief, Alexandre de Moraes, presented the amendment to the other judges on Tuesday’s session, and it was unanimously approved. "The Armed Forces’ participation in the list of entities monitoring the electronic voting system and also in the Electoral Transparency Commission was not necessary, reasonable or efficient," Mr. Moraes said.According to him, the military will continue to play the role it has always played in the electoral system, helping ensure voter security in more sensitive locations and providing logistical support for transporting electronic voting machines to remote areas.The elections chief also removed the Federal Supreme Court (STF) from the list. In a kind of compensation to the military, the TSE also decided that the so-called integrity test with biometrics will become a permanent feature.
