Government buildings in Brasília are damaged in invasion

In an unprecedented attack on institutions and the Democratic Rule of Law, supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro (Liberal Party, PL) invaded and damaged the Planalto Palace, the Supreme Court (STF) and the National Congress this Sunday. The acts of terrorism occurred with the connivance of the Federal District government and were criticized by authorities of the three branches of government. Foreign leaders also condemned the attacks, which led the federal government to decree an intervention in the security area of the Federal District (where Brasília is located) until January 31.The episode caused ministers to hold an emergency meeting at the Ministry of Justice, a few meters from where the attacks were taking place. Present were the ministers of Justice, Flávio Dino, of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, and of Defense, José Múcio. Also present were general Gonçalves Dias, with the Institutional Security Office (GSI) of the Presidency, and the vice-governor of the Federal District, Celina Leão.The acts began after supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) left the area where they were camped in front of the Army Headquarters and, escorted by the Military Police of the Federal District, walked to the Três Poderes (Three Powers) square. The same could be seen in relation to the plenary of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).In a statement, Chief Justice Rosa Weber said that the Court building was "severely destroyed" and that she will act to punish the "terrorists". "The Supreme Court will not allow itself to be intimidated by criminal acts and those of delinquents who are opposed to the Democratic Rule of Law," she said."Brazil lived this Sunday — January 8, 2023 — a sad and deplorable page of its history, fruit of the non-conformism of those who refuse to accept democracy," she said. "The STF will act so that the terrorists who took...
