Government greenlights purchase of Pfizer, J&J vaccine

Health Minister Eduardo Pazuello greenlighted the purchase of 100 million doses of Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine. The ministry will also start talks to buy 38 million doses of the vaccine produced by Johnson & Johnson's pharmaceutical arm Janssen.

The deal comes amid strong pressure on the government as Covid-19 claims over 1,500 lives a day in Brazil. Governors and companies have been signaling their intention to buy vaccines independently from the federal government's program amid the slow vaccination campaign.

President Jair Bolsonaro has also been criticized for his denialist stance and for not having closed a deal with several manufacturers last year, since it was already known that mass vaccination was the only way out of the pandemic.

Mr. Pazuello's endorsement to the purchases comes after Congress passed a law authorizing the federal government, states and municipalities to take responsibility for any adverse events caused by the vaccine.

This requirement by Pfizer has been heavily criticized by President Bolsonaro and cited by him and other federal authorities as an obstacle to the acquisition of the vaccine.

So far, the federal government had only closed a deal for the purchase of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine and Coronavac, produced by China's Sinovac. Another 10 million doses of the Russian Sputnik vaccine are expected to be delivered by Brazilian drugmaker União Química by May 31.

Minister Pazuello released a video Wednesday saying the talks for the purchase of Covid-19 vaccine baches with Pfizer have moved forward. The video recording was made during a videoconference meeting with executives of the American drug maker, who confirmed the minister's statement.
