Hybrid plants start supplying Roraima’s electricity system

The Brazilian holding company Oncorp started the commercial operation of the hybrid plants (diesel-solar-battery) installed in the isolated system of Roraima. The plants, with a capacity of 6.3 megawatts and the ability to supply more than 40,000 households, are located in the cities of Amajari and Pacaraima and represented an investment of R$55 million. The investment also includes a third natural gas plant in the city of Uiramutã (Roraima), which is still to be defined with the local distributor, Amazonas Energia, and is not expected to be operational in the short term. The plants were purchased by the company in the auction of isolated systems held by the federal government in 2021 to supply Boa Vista and other locations and were to be operated exclusively with diesel fuel. Of the five lots available, the company won two (2 and 5, Amazonas and Roraima, respectively). The executive director of Oncorp, João Mattos, told Valor that even without the contractual obligation, the company modified the original 100% diesel project at its own expense to include solar photovoltaic generation coupled with the use of batteries for energy storage. Baterias Moura is the supplier of the storage system."The design of the auction already included a hybrid solution, but with some uncertainties, not to mention the timeframe to have a commercial solution ready. So, we preferred to go to the auction with the 100% diesel plant. When we won the auction, we were already in advanced talks with Moura," he said. "Then we decided to go for a hybrid system."Mr. Mattos explains that the combination of batteries and solar panels makes it possible to store the surplus electricity generated by the solar panels during the day and is seen as a solution to reduce the use of diesel in the generating sets. This combination of energy sources allows the optimization of energy resources, but according to the executive Brazil has experienced a regulatory void that has prevented innovation in the auctions.Oncorp’s plants are the first in Brazil’s isolated system with the green seal. The battery system has 1 MW, and the solar plants have 2 MWp. Diesel consumption will be 20% more efficient during the five years of the contract and avoid 47,000 tonnes of CO2.The forecast is a reduction of about 1 million liters of fuel per year. Of the R$55 million invested, R$35 million was...
