Lula, Biden set to discuss labor rights in upcoming meeting

The Minister of Labor, Luiz Marinho, gave some details Sunday in New York about the joint initiative between Brazil and the United States to be announced on Wednesday, when presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Joe Biden will meet and discuss, among other topics, issues related to labor rights. The event is expected to deal with policies for app workers, the right to union representation, and decent work. Union leaders from both countries will be present. The joint work began in July.In a significant development for Brazil, Mr. Marinho, a member of the Brazilian government delegation in New York, emphasized the country’s re-emergence as a global leader. He noted the groundbreaking nature of the United States’ stance on labor issues, stating, "This is the first time, to my knowledge, that the White House has appointed an advisor specifically for labor matters." Mr. Marinho is in New York as part of Brazil’s delegation, where President Lula is set to give the traditional opening speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.President Lula is scheduled for a series of bilateral meetings during his visit, and one potential meeting is with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Jaques Wagner, the government leader in Senate, revealed that Brazil has offered Mr. Zelensky two time slots to choose from. A near-miss occurred in May at the G7 summit in Japan, where both leaders attended as guests. Despite offering multiple time slots for a meeting, the Brazilian government confirmed that the two leaders ultimately did not meet.At last week’s G20 summit in India, President Lula drew criticism for his pro-Russia stance, announcing plans to invite Russian leader Vladimir Putin to a future G20 meeting in Brazil. Mr. Lula is set to assume the presidency of the G20 in November of next year.Meanwhile, as part of Brazil’s UN General Assembly delegation in New York, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad revealed his intention this week to court foreign investors with opportunities in clean energy. He also discussed possibly introducing a legislative package similar to the United States’ Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).Mr. Haddad is also participating in New York’s Climate Week and told journalists that he is devoted to promoting Brazil’s transition to renewable energy.
