Lula confirms Lewandowski as Minister of Justice

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made the official announcement of former Federal Supreme Court (STF) Justice Ricardo Lewandowski as the new Minister of Justice (MJ) and promised to give him ‘carte blanche’ to build his team in the ministry. Mr. Lewandowski takes the position of Flávio Dino, from the Brazilian Socialist Party, (PSB) in the state of Maranhão.While Mr. Dino leaves the government to take a position opened at the STF following Justice Rosa Weber’s retirement, Mr. Lewandowski takes the opposite path: he left the Court in April last year and will now occupy a position in the Lula administration."Today is a happy day because I am in front of a comrade [Dino] who is providing the country with an extraordinary service and who will appropriately become a Justice of the Supreme Court. The communication was made amid attempts by the PSB, Flávio Dino’s party, to guarantee the maintenance of some of its secretaries in the ministry."Usually, I do not appoint any names to any ministry. I want people to build their own team. If I were a football coach, I wouldn’t allow the president, no matter how important he was, to pick my team. I’m the one who selects my team. If I lose, take me out, if I win, I’ll continue," President Lula said. However, Mr. Lula soon after said he plans to meet with Mr. Lewandowski at the beginning of February to discuss "who will enter" and "who will leave" the ministry. One of the PSB’s most significant names in the...
