Marfrig halts cattle slaughter, furloughs employees in one plant

Marfrig has suspended the slaughter of cattle at its plant in Alegrete, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and furloughed employees for 10 days. Some employees started the recess on Monday and some others on Tuesday."The 10-day furlough, as in previous years, were motivated by operational adjustments at the Alegrete plant," the company said in a statement to Valor. The company added that its other plants in Rio Grande do Sul will continue to operate normally.However, the president of the Alegrete food workers’ union, Marcos Rosse, said that employees were told that the work stoppage was motivated by a lack of cattle for slaughter. "They claim they have no raw material," he said.According to Mr. Rosse, slaughtering at the plant was already at a low level days before the start of the furlough. He believes that Marfrig will actually perform maintenance during this period, mentioning that there was a recent problem with a cold room at the plant.The Alegrete plant employs about 650 people and is the largest food business in the city.
