Neoenergia combines solar and wind power in Paraíba

The sunlight and the wind, which in the past punished the backlands of the Northeast, are today riches that bring economic and social development to the region. In the municipalities of Santa Luzia, Areia de Baraúnas, São José de Sabugi, and São Mamede, about 300 kilometers from João Pessoa, in Paraíba, Neoenergia inaugurated the first combined renewable power generation complex in Brazil. With a total investment of R$3.5 billion, the Neoenergia Renewable Complex combines three assets in an unprecedented manner: the Neoenergia Chafariz wind complex, the Neoenergia Luzia solar farm, and a transmission complex. The installed capacity of the complex totals 0.6 gigawatts. In energy equivalent, its production would be enough to supply 1.3 million households per year. The Neoenergia Chafariz complex comprises 15 wind farms and 136 wind turbines with an installed capacity of 471.2 MW, which has been in full operation since the beginning of 2022. The two Neoenergia Luzia plants, on the other hand, have 228,000 panels and an installed capacity of 149.2 MWp, and mark the company’s debut in centralized photovoltaic generation (the jargon used to say that it is carried out in large plants and sent to consumers through transmission lines). The plants are connected to the National Interconnected System (SIN) through the Neoenergia Santa Luzia II substation and the corresponding 345-kilometer transmission line. The company will hold an event Wednesday with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira to make the handover of the project official.Neoenergia CEO Eduardo Capelastegui told Valor that the idea is that the electricity from the solar project will complement the production of the wind farm, whose generation is more intense at night due to the winds in the region — that is, one generates when the other is less available.According to Mr. Capelastegui, the combination of energy sources with different hourly production profiles makes it possible to optimize and utilize the idle capacity of the power transmission system, creating a more stable type of production, in addition to reducing operating costs and optimizing the use of the power transmission system, since the transmission substation is shared."During the day, the photovoltaic farm...
