New Chief Justice defends Car Wash, independent Judiciary

The new Chief Justice of Brazil's Federal Supreme Court (STF), Luiz Fux, signaled in his first speech in his new role that he will adopt a more independent stance in relation to the other branches of government. The speech was a departure from the stance of his predecessor Dias Toffoli, who maintained a close relationship with the heads of the Executive and Legislative branches. Although some in Brasília say Mr. Toffoli was a key player in preventing a deepening of crises, members of the STF had been showing some discomfort with the situation.
