Power transmission towers hit by sabotage

After the attacks promoted by radical supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro — with the destruction of the headquarters of the three branches of power, in Brasília, on Sunday — the Brazilian electrical system was the target of attacks in three transmission lines in Paraná and Rondônia, and towers were toppled. The attacks did not interrupt the supply of electricity, even though the three lines were automatically shut down. Two of them — the transmission lines of Itaipu (Paraná) and Madeira (Rondônia) — carry a large load of electricity between different regions of the country, whose transmission system is interconnected. The acts of vandalism have led to the creation of a situation room by the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), coordinated by the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (Aneel), with the participation of heads of generation, transmission, and distribution companies to analyze the physical and cybernetic integrity of the facilities, as Valor PRO, Valor’s real-time information service, reported on Tuesday. Aneel has requested that generation, transmission, and distribution companies activate contingency plans to prevent the situation from worsening in the face of new actions of vandalism on assets in operation in the electric sector. The group released between Monday and Tuesday two brief reports with information about the affected lines. On Tuesday, a bulletin with preliminary data on the system operation — released daily by the ONS, Brazil’s national grid operator — brought details of the wrecked transmission lines. The situation room and the ONS were cautious in the documents, without stating that the incidents were caused by radical supporters of former President Bolsonaro. Aneel and Eletronorte spoke of evidence of "sabotage" and "vandalism." Valor has learned from three sources familiar with the matter that linked the action against one of the towers, in Medianeira (Paraná), to radical supporters of Mr. Bolsonaro. For the former president of Aneel Edvaldo Santana, the acts are not the work of amateur people, since strategic infrastructures were attacked. "With Itaipu, we wouldn’t have big problems, because we have a lot of power in the four submarkets, but the plant is at the time of maximum generation and this is the time when it has the most water. In the Madeira line, there are two bipoles. One of them is stopped for maintenance. If another tower were to be compromised, Jirau and Santo Antônio, two of Brazil’s...
