Private universities enroll more students for face-to-face classes

Large educational groups like Ânima/Laureate, Cruzeiro do Sul, Kroton, Ser Educacional and Yduqs, which account for 40% of the private higher education market in Brazil, saw double-digit growth in the number of enrollments for on-site courses in the entrance examinations held in the middle of this year. This expansion has happened even after slight increases in the price of the tuition. It is significant, because the rise in the number of new students was not boosted by the granting of discounts, a common practice adopted in previous years in order to draw students. The performance of these large publicly traded companies is seen by experts as a sign of recovery in the on-site higher education market, whose most important entrance exams take place at the beginning of each year. A survey of 600 students by the consulting firm Educa Insights shows that 63% intend to go to the university at the beginning of 2022.The increase in enrollment at the beginning of next year, if it is really confirmed, will be a relief for the companies in the sector - in the last five years, the on-site undergraduate market has suffered successive losses due to the reduction of the government’s student financing program (Fies). Of this total, 6.5 million study in private colleges, according to the Ministry of Education. In the third quarter of this year, it is noteworthy that the in-class attendance at Ser Educacional, Cruzeiro do Sul and Ydqus was similar or stronger than in remote learning - which has helped the sector in the pandemic."One possibility is that there has been a migration from online to on-site, which in our case is already hybrid," said Rodrigo Alves Macedo, head of investor relations at Ser Educacional, which had a 32% growth in both face-to-face and remote learning. At Cruzeiro do Sul, the growth in face-to-face attendance was 32%, compared with only 2.2% in online classes. The company claims that this performance was impacted by digital competition. But it is not possible to affirm that this is a trend. Vitru, owner of Uniasselvi, with focus on remote learning, had an organic growth of 27% in attracting new students. "We had a strong demand in nursing courses, which alone accounted for 8% of our intake, and have an average tuition 50%...
