Sabesp plans R$260bn investment by 2060

The privatization of water utility Sabesp includes a mandatory investment plan of R$68 billion until 2029 aimed at the universalization of service coverage, although the amount could reach R$260 billion by 2060, according to the São Paulo state government. The investments are part of a new agreement that Sabesp should sign with the regional unit (which represents the 375 cities served) after privatization, and which was released on Thursday (15) to public consultation.Until 2029, the investments are mandatory. By that year, Sabesp will have to reach the target of serving 99% of the population with water supply and 90% with sewage collection. After that, the investment schedule should be a reference, which means it can be changed.The schedule set until 2060 estimates that, after the initial investment phase that will last up to 2029, R$62 billion should be allocated until 2039, R$75 billion until 2049, and another R$53 billion until 2060.For the São Paulo city, the municipality with the greatest weight for Sabesp, R$19 billion is expected by 2029 and R$84 billion by 2060, said Natália Resende, Secretary of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics, at a press conference.The public consultation on the new contract will remain open until March 15th. Eight public hearings will also be held. The new contract is expected to be finalized and approved by the regional unit by April.
