Zara store employee accused of racism in police investigation

Witnesses to a police investigation in Ceará about an alleged act of racism committed by a Zara employee said the company directed workers to use a procedure word to warn about the entry of black people into the store at the Shopping Iguatemi in Fortaleza.According to Ceará state’s chief commissioner Sérgio Pereiras, who is leading the investigation, the code "Zara zerou" was triggered by the store’s sound system when people "of color" or wearing "simple clothes" entered the store. The word in Portuguese "zerou" means reset to zero and apparently has no specific link with skin color or dress code.The investigation was started on September 14 after a complaint by police officer Ana Paula Barroso, who claims to have been prevented from entering the Zara store at Shopping Iguatemi. The victim was wearing a mask under her chin and was eating ice cream when she was told to leave the store by a store employee.According to the police, the Zara employee who asked the customer to leave said he took the measure for sanitary reasons. However, video footage showed that the same employee spoke to other white customers without masks or with masks down a few minutes before the episode.
