RESUMO
O objetivo deste artigo é o de reetir sobre as representações construídas sobre o Estado do Brasil
e o Estado do Maranhão, a partir da documentação produzida no e sobre o Maranhão, de meados
do século XVII a meados do século XVIII. Trata-se de discutir de que maneira essas duas unidades
administrativas independentes da América portuguesa eram percebidas e de que modo o exame dessas
representações pode nos ajudar a reetir sobre a complexidade da formação da América portuguesa.

MARANHÃO, BRAZIL, AND PORTUGUESE AMERICA (17TH
AND 18TH CENTURIES)
ABSTRACT
This article examines the representations drawn from the State of Maranhão and the State of Brazil, two
separate provinces of Portuguese America, based on documents written in and about Maranhão from
the mid-seventeenth to the mid-eighteenth century. It discusses how these two provinces of Portuguese
America were perceived, and how the analysis of these representations can help us reect on the
complexity of the formation of the Portuguese America.
