RESUMO:
O presente estudo é uma revisão das formulações freudianas sobre a peça Macbeth, de
William Shakespeare, avançando, especialmente, na interpretação das motivações de
Lady Macbeth – personagem que, segundo Freud, é um exemplo típico de
personalidade que entra em derrocada ao alcançar o que ambiciona. São levantados
aspectos adicionais, a partir das considerações de Harold Bloom, que visam avançar
alguns pontos não contemplados nas teses freudianas concernentes à tragédia sem,
contudo, invalidá-las. Ressalta-se ainda o caráter especulativo da análise da
personalidade de uma personagem de peça teatral, tendo em vista que nenhuma
interpretação pode afirmar-se como definitiva.

ABSTRACT:
The present paper is a review of Freudian formulations on the stage play Macbeth, by
William Shakespeare, going, specially, into the interp retation of Lady Macbeth’s
motivations - character who according to Freud is a typical example of personality
who falls into ruin as her ambition is achieved. Additional aspects are regarded, from
Harold Bloom’s considerations, which aim to go through some points disregarded in
Freudian’s approach concerning to the tragedy without, nevertheless, neglecting them.
The speculative feature of the analyses of a character’s personality in a stage play is
even emphasized, taking into account that no interpretation could be stated as definite.
