Change is such hard work2
Abstract: India was always looking forward to move towards e-learning.
The challenge of making technology available at the doorstep loomed
large. In a traditional system the institution provides a physical space and
a structured setting for the students to share interests, thoughts, hopes and
emotions. The teachers try to complete the assigned syllabus of the course.
The total time spent would be a total of 60 to 90 hours. At the end of the
course the student has to write an exam which is of three hours duration.
Each student has to write around 10 questions to pass the examinations. In
online environment most of the syllabus is covered online. To reduce
physical contact in this difficult time of the pandemic examinations are also
conducted online. In an online mode the students have to find their own
physical space. Human beings in general thrive on social interaction,
which was missing in traditional e-learning platforms. The questions which

online. Constant feedbacks are taken from parents and students. Students
are being monitored constantly. The real challenge is to make online
classes more engaging. Research from the World Economic Forum Covid
Action Platform suggests that online learning has shown that it increases
retention of information.3 In an online platform the course content can be
presented in a convenient manner and there is more flexibility. It brings
education right to the doorstep of the learner. It promotes a lifelong
learning and teaches the discipline.
On the other hand, online learning may give rise to challenges. E-
learners may struggle to adapt with technology. The time a person spends
on learning online is much more as compared to regular classroom. A
person would require real good time management skills to complete
assigned tasks on time. From the learner’s perspective the learner may feel
isolated. Since they are not able to keep up with the class, they may lack
motivation. The learner has to be active listener to gain from this
experience. There is a lot of freedom in an online class which sometimes
is a challenge for the learner. Online programs require the learner to make
