  • Time-varying weekday effects in the vietnamese stock market: pre-and during-covid-19 evidence

This study investigates the weekday effects in the Vietnamese stock market by using the data across two distinct periods, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data series spans from January 2018 to March 2022 with five major indices: VN-Index, Largecap, Midcap, Smallcap, and VN30. We employ both OLS and GARCH (1, 1) models with weekday dummies to capture mean and volatility dynamics. Our results show that weekday effects were weak and index-specific in the pre-pandemic period; only Largecap and Smallcap indices were observed with significant anomalies. However, a consistent and statistically significant Friday effect was presented across all indices during the pandemic. It indicates reduced market efficiency and provides empirical support for the Adaptive Market Hypothesis. In addition, volatility persistence decreased during the COVID-19 crisis, which means that volatility shocks became more intense but less persistent. These findings make some contributions to the literature. First, they offer multi-index, time-varying evidence of calendar anomalies in a frontier market. Second, they highlight how exogenous shocks can temporarily distort market efficiency

  • Coalition-building and islamist participation in popular uprisings: evidence from july 2024 in Bangladesh

The July 2024 uprising in Bangladesh marked a major episode of mass mobilization, as student-led protests against government job quota reforms rapidly evolved into a nationwide challenge to the Awami League. This study investigates the role of Islamist actors—including Jamaat-e-Islami, Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir, Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, and Islami Andolan Bangladesh—in shaping the movement's trajectory. Using a qualitative research design, the study triangulates data from in-depth interviews with student leaders, political party representatives, journalists, human rights workers, government officials, law enforcement personnel, political scientists, legal advocates, and Islamic scholars, alongside media reports, organizational statements, and relevant scholarly literature. The analysis explores how Islamist groups navigated the interplay between religious ideology, political opportunity structures, and grassroots mobilization during a rapidly shifting political crisis. Findings indicate the emergence of strategic coalitions among Islamist organizations, secular opposition parties, and student networks, demonstrating how coalition-building enhanced the political visibility and legitimacy of Islamist actors within the broader protest movement. Islamist participation proved instrumental in sustaining protest momentum, expanding geographic reach, and reframing the uprising as a wider struggle against authoritarianism and structural injustice. The study contributes to scholarship on social movements, Islamist politics, and coalition dynamics in hybrid political contexts

  • Investigation of the effect of university students' curiosity-exploration tendency and social media usage levels on their attitudes towards sports tourism

The aim of the research is to examine the effects of university students' curiosity-exploration tendency and social media usage level on their attitudes towards sports tourism. The universe of the research consists of Bitlis Eren University (BEU) students. The sample of the research consists of 437 students (159 male and 278 female) who were randomly selected with the purposive sampling method and agreed to participate in the research voluntarily. In the research, "Personal Information Form" was used as the data collection tool, "Attitude Towards Sports Tourism Scale" was used to determine the attitudes of the participants towards sports tourism, "Social Media Usage Scale" was used to determine the social media usage levels of the participants, and "Curiosity and Exploration Scale-II" was used to determine the curiosity levels of individuals. SPSS 23.0 statistical analysis program was used to analyze the data obtained in the research. Pearson Correlation and Regression tests were applied for research analyzes. The research was approved by the BEU Social and Human Sciences Research Ethics Board with the decision numbered 2024/03-3 and E.6338. In the research, it was determined that there was a statistically significant positive relationship between the curiosity-exploration level of the participants and the social media usage level (p0.05). As a result, it is possible to say that the attitude towards sports tourism is mostly related to the intrinsic curiosity and exploration searches of individuals, and that the effect of social media is limited on this attitude

  • Beyond compliance: developing and applying a situational questionnaire on research ethics in european public research organisations

This paper explores the development and use of a situational questionnaire designed to understand how ethical principles are comprehended, interpreted, and acted upon within European public research organisations. Moving beyond compliance-focused and regulatory views of research ethics, the questionnaire captures both personal and organisational perspectives on ethically sensitive situations, including principles such as reliability, honesty, respect, and accountability. Building on previous methodological work, the tool was utilised within the Joint Research Centre's TTO Circle [1, 2] network to investigate how researchers and organisations perceive the need for ethical assessment across various scenarios. The findings highlight significant gaps between individual attitudes and institutional practices and reveal a tendency to prioritise well-established or formally regulated ethical areas over everyday research situations. The study demonstrates the usefulness of situational analysis in identifying tensions between autonomy and governance and underscores opportunities to strengthen ethics frameworks in research organisations through clearer, more transparent, and more context-aware approaches

  • Criminal liability of commercial legal entities under the provisions of the vietnamese criminal law

The 2015 Penal Code of Vietnam for the first time establishes the criminal liability of commercial legal entities (CLEs), including foreign legal entities, marking a significant milestone in Vietnam's criminal policy. The recognition of CLEs as subjects of criminal offenses contributes to enhancing the effectiveness of crime prevention and control in the economic and environmental sectors, while also strengthening the legal accountability of enterprises. However, in practice, this policy still encounters various institutional limitations and inconsistencies that hinder law enforcement. Based on an analysis of the provisions of the 2015 Penal Code, this article identifies the existing shortcomings and proposes solutions to improve the legal framework governing the criminal liability of CLEs

  • The relationship between directors' and officers' liability insurance and esg performance of FTSE4 good bursa malaysia companies

This study will analyze the correlation between Directors and Officers Liability insurance (D&O insurance) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance among the listed companies under FTSE4 Good Bursa Malaysia Index. It is aimed at evaluating how D&O insurance promotes sustainability of corporate practices through improving governance systems or, on the contrary, results in moral hazard and opportunistic actions. Through the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression analysis, the study relies on the annual report and ESG ratings on the financial year 2021 to assess how D&O insurance affects the ESG performance. The results show a high positive correlation, which means that the D&O insurance can help to reinforce corporate governance through responsible decision-making and sustainable business strategies. Nevertheless, the research also contains the possibility of risks, since the D&O insurance may create complacency in corporate executives, which may jeopardize the long-term ESG goals. The insight can be added to the existing body of knowledge regarding corporate governance and sustainability since it offers empirical data on the dual impact of D&O insurance in the Malaysian corporate environment. The originality of the study is in the fact that the novel monitoring and opportunistic hypotheses of the insurance are addressed in the framework of ESG, which proves to be highly beneficial in the context of businesses, investors, and policymakers. Knowing the subtle connection between D&O insurance and ESG performance, stakeholders will be able to come up with more constructive governance models that would maximize sustainable benefits and reduce the occurrence of unintended consequences

  • Factors affecting ethical consumer behavior: the case of retail shoppers in the mekong delta, Vietnam

The paper investigates ethical consumer behavior among retail shoppers in the Mekong Delta, addressing the lack of localized measurement scales within developing market contexts. Grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior, the study extends the theoretical framework by incorporating variables such as attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control, alongside social-capital-related constructs including involvement, support, sustainability, and advocacy. Employing a mixed-methods approach and survey data collected from 312 consumers across multiple provinces in the region, the research validates a multidimensional measurement model using PLS-SEM. The findings reveal that perceived behavioral control and subjective norms exert strong influences on ethical consumption intentions, while ethical perception plays a crucial role in shaping behavioral outcomes such as support and sustainability. Notably, attitude does not demonstrate a significant effect within the cultural context of the Mekong Delta. The study underscores the importance of social influence and self-efficacy in shaping ethical purchasing behavior and proposes a contextually adapted measurement scale that can serve as a valuable foundation for future research in this domain
